What Is Ephedrine Used For and Is It Safe?

Ephedrine is a stimulant and bronchodilator. The FDA-approved compound is used for temporary relief of mild and intermittent asthma symptoms. These symptoms include wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

It works by relaxing airway muscles and improving airflow. When used exactly as directed, ephedrine is considered safe for short-term use in adults. However, taking higher doses or combining it with other stimulants can increase risks. Increased risks include elevated heart rate, increased blood pressure, heart attack, or stroke. This is why strict dosing limits, purchase restrictions, and medical warnings apply.
