The importance of taking a Multi Vitamin for bodybuilders.

Live Lean Today know that despite their grave importance, a good mutivitamin seems to get neglected in a body builders supplement plan. I choose the word grave because there are many vitamin deficient illness that can be fatal. Your body needs certain vitamins and minerals just to survive and to ward off nutritional deficiency. It needs more when training. so every good plan for getting fit requires a quality multivitamin. It becomes even more need when you are trying to build pounds of muscle over a long period of time.

When beginning bodybuilders think about supplements, their first thoughts usually turn to Whey protein, andros, nitric oxide, creatine, stimulants, or maybe something else. They forget the most important supplement that you must have in your arsenal, a multivitamin. If you don't take them, you better change that immediately if you want to meet your weight lifting goals.

What Is A Multi Vitamin And Why Do I Need To Take One?

For the human body to complete all the tasks it has in a normal day, it must be given a wide and complex variety of vitamins, nutrients and trace mineral. Becoming deficient in any one of these essential vitamins or minerals causes breakdown of the metabolic pathway that produces optimum efficiency and performance goes down quick. Making sure you take a high-potency multivitamin/multi-mineral formula can help ensure the presence of those essential nutrients necessary for all of your metabolic functions.

During my reign as a body builder I used the Beverly International Super Pack daily. I won 5 over-all titles, and sure the Super Pack is not glamorous, it does not give you instant feed back that you can see in 45 minutes like some supplements can. But it is over the long haul that a good vitamin complex shows it benefits. Bodybuilders, athletes, and people that lead active lifestyles need even more nutrients than the average non-active person. So if you think that just grabbing the first one you see on the shelf is going to work for you, think again.

Multis are not going to help you put 50lbs your bench in a year, but they are going to help you be able to put 50 lbs on your bench in a year. However since that is the case, most people don't think about buying a vitamin pack to add to their supplement program.

Without the multi, science proves that the other supplements you take will not work as well. The multi-vitamin is a foundation of a great supplement strategy. If you are in serious, and heavy training, endurance, or sports then you'll find support for faster recovery, and better healing by taking your multi as soon as you finish working out.

What Makes Up A Good Multi-Vitamin?

Most multi vitamins are comprised of the same individual vitamins and minerals. They are normally packaged together in multis, but there are differences between vitamins and minerals.

1. Vitamins

Vitamins are organic compounds which are needed in small quantities to sustain life. We get vitamins from food, because the human body either does not produce enough of them, or none at all. They are more complex than minerals and all vitamins are required by our bodies for survival. Vitamins control the chemical reactions within the body to convert food into energy and living tissue. They are either water soluble which must be taken daily since they are not stored in the body (Vitamin C and all of the B Vitamins) or they are fat soluble, which are stored in the body (A, D, E, and K).An organic compound contains carbon. When you cannot produce enough of an organic chemical compound that is needed then you have to get it from food.

Vitamins are effected by heat, light, and chemical agents, so food preparation, processing, and storing it must be appropriate to preserve vitamins so you get the nutritional value out of the meal.

Vitamin Basic Function

A Vision, healthy skin and mucous membranes, bone and tooth growth, immune system health
B complex Important for nerve function, normal vision and skin health, nervous and digestive systems
C Immune system and protects cells
D Absorption and use of calcium
E Powerful antioxidant
K Bones, teeth and cartilage health
Zinc Immune System Health

2. Minerals

Minerals are inorganic. They are much simpler in chemical form than vitamins. They are much more stable in food preparation than vitamins also. Minerals are categorized as major/macro - (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, and sulfur), and trace/micro- (iron, iodine, zinc, chromium, selenium, fluoride, molybdenum, copper, and manganese) minerals.

Major minerals we need in dosages greater than 100 mg a day. The trace minerals we only need a small amount daily to sufficient. Here is a very important part, Minerals are used to produce necessary hormones. Does that sound important to any bodybuilders out there?

Mineral Basic Function

Boron for metabolism of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous
Calcium for strong and healthy normal bones
Chromium for insulin production
Copper to strengthen connective tissue
Iodine for thyroid and hormone synthesis
Iron to carry oxygen within protein hemoglobin
Lutein for eye health
Lycopene for heart health, supports healthy cholesterol
Magnesium for over 300 biochemical reactions of body
Manganese is a co-factor in energy production, activator of many enzymes
Molybdenum supports normal liver and kidney health
Nickel for healthy skin and bone structure
Potassium is used by Autonomic Nervous System (heart beat, brain function)
Selenium helps fight against many health problems
Vanadium works with Molybdenum

There are other factors that must be considered when taking and choosing a multivitamin. Men and women need different nutrients for their bodies to do what they need to do every day. Therefore, men and women's multivitamins are going to have some differences. A man's multi is more than likely going to contain saw palmetto for a healthy prostate. Also, some formulas for men will have ingredients such as horny goat weed and DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) which supports testosterone.

Women's multis have formulas which focus more on skin, nails, and hair health. There are also Pre-Natal multis for expecting mothers.

There are multivitamins that are beneficial for kids too. Children's multis are made specifically for kids that are growing every day. Kids that take vitamins seem to focus better in school and be sick less often.

There are also teenager specific multis on the market since they need different vitamins and minerals as their bodies grow into adulthood. A lot of growth spurts occur during teenage years so nutrition is crucial for proper development.

There is even more to consider. You can take tablets, capsules, or if you are not a fan of pills, you can even take liquid or chewable multis. The options are out there to find a quality formula for your specific needs.

Hopefully by now you know and appreciate the true value of what a multivitamin means to your bodybuilding and fitness goals. The protein, energy drinks, and all the others are great, but without a multi, you are not meeting your true physical fitness potential.

It doesn't matter whether you are male or female, young or old, bodybuilder, football player, or everyday gym rat. Your multi should be the first supplement you take every day.
