What is Kratom?

The active ingredients in Kratom are opioid receptor agents that have similar effects to morphine.  Kratom has shown to activate supraspinal mu- and delta- opioid receptors which is believed to be the pathway that allows kratom to be used by narcotic users going through withdrawal symptoms.  (1)

Kratom has been used for self-remedy opioid withdraw from individuals with chronic pain.  The kratom alkaloid of mitragynine is believed to bind with mu- and kappa-opioid receptors.  Kratom’s ability to bind to opioid receptors is the keep pathway believed to support the use of kratom for opioid withdraw.  (2)
