A 12-week research study looked at the weight loss effects of ephedra, caffeine, and white willow bark.  One hundred and two subjects participated from ages 18 to 65 years old. The study was a double-blind study with both the ephedra group and a placebo group. The researchers measured body weight, body fat percentage, total fat mass, waist circumference, BMI, heart rate, and blood pressure.

The results found that the ephedra treatment lost an average of 1.5kg of body weight over the placebo group. Over the 12-week program the ephedra group had greater reductions in both BMI and waist circumference with no adverse effects on blood pressure and heart rate pulse.
